Algarve Resorts - Tavira
Monday, 16th November 2009
Tavira is a very attractive, atmospheric and largely unspoilt town only 12 miles from the Spanish border. Faro is 18 miles to the east. Monte Gordo and Alhao are only 12 miles away.
The town has a Roman bridge, built over the River Gilao, which bisects the town. There are so many waterways, the town has been referred to as The Algarve’s very own Venice.
There are several beaches in the area, the best being on the Island of Ilha de Tavira. This little island is accessable by ferry from the town, and has a quite lovely sandy beach. Surrounding the town are Orange Groves and Almond trees. Two golf courses are nearby, with more under construction.
This is a lovely old town and very enjoyable simply to stroll around. Tavira holds a sardine festival each June, with the customary music and dancing, and of course, lots of wine.
There are regular bus services to Faro and other parts of The Algarve, and accross the border to Spain. The Algarve train runs to Faro and Vila Real. There is also a little tourist train that runs around the attractions.
The town has plenty of bars and restaurants, where visotors can eat and drink in a very relaxed atmosphere.
