Beaches

There hundreds of  lovely beaches in The Algarve, many of which are world famous, and rightly so. There are lots with EU Blue Flag accreditation. This covers such matters as:

* water quality (the latest test certificate must be posted)
* environmental matters such as recycling
* offering information about the local ecosystem
* adequate sanitary, safety and first-aid facilities
* telephone and drinking water availability
* adequate wheelchair access where topography allows
* proper maintenance of any buildings on the beach.

The beaches vary from long stretches of golden sand to small bays to secluded coves.  Many extend for considerable distances; some are nearly three miles long. Everywhere you will find lovely crystal clear waters.

Visitors will find that all beaches are kept in pristine condition, most with daily cleaning, and the major beaches will have plenty of bars, restaurants and cafes close by.

Beach Safety

A word of caution. Sea currents are strong in the Algarve area, and care should be taken when swimming.  The further west you go along the coast, the more choppier the seas can become. Obviously, extra care should be taken with children. In addition, once the summer season is over at the end of September, beach lifeguards are usually not in attendance.

Only swim when you see the Green Flag, which means conditions are good. A yellow flag advises caution, and never go into the sea if there is a red flag. Simply look for the flags, and be sensible.
