The Algarve has hot summers and mild winters. The area does not have a great deal of rainfall, which in some years has resulted in water shortages. The region has an amazing amount of sunshine, more than 3,000 hours a year, and the highest of any region in Europe. The winters are exceptionally mild and pleasant.
January sees average daytime temperatures of 15 degrees Celsius, although highs in the low twenties are not uncommon. Evening temperatures will fall to around ten degrees, so visitors are advice to wear a light jacket or sweater. February and March are fairly similar, but come April and you feel everything warming up. While recorded average temperatures are around 18 degrees, the south western part, towards Tavira and the Spanish border are higher. May is noticeably warmer, and temperatures continue to rise through the peak summer months of June, July August and September, when temperatures can easily exceed 30 degrees. Maximum temperatures begin to tail off towards the end of September, but stay not far short of 20 degrees right up to Christmas. Evenings from May to September are balmy and lovely, and still around the 14 to 15 degree level in October to December.
The Algarve is a year round destination. The summers attract the sun-seekers, while the beautifully mild winters draw an increasing number of visitors from Northern Europe. Sunshine is pretty well guaranteed for the whole year.
